A few days ago I did a post on my style blog about motivation and priorities and notetaking, and a few of you asked about how I use evernote. (That’s a referral link, and if you download and install it, we both get a month of premium.) Here is a (albeit heavily redacted) screenshot of my setup. I am blocking my tags and journals etc out because I’m in the research stage of a lot of things and I feel weird about sharing my actual outlines to stories, but here is the setup. I have notebooks of themes — for example, my jezebel post was tentatively called beauty is terror (which is also a tag on this blog, for good measure), and so I have a bunch of notes relating to my outline, and then a big note that is the outline itself. For very nuanced stories like that one I outline everything. My outline for this story was 8 pages printed out, actually, to give you an idea of how much thought goes into 1000 words. Actually, I use evernote kind of like how I use Tumblr, only it’s private and less distracting. What I like about it is you can screenshot within Chrome and upload notes into journals — this helps a lot when I’m reading through databases. Totally invaluable. And it automatically syncs all the time, so no work is lost. This is how I organize my brain now.
Hope that helps!
